In December 2019 the United Nation Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, Ursula Mueller, visited Niger with the aim of assessing the deteriorating humanitarian crisis and raising international awareness about it. The delegation travelled to the regions of Diffa, Maradi and Tillabery, meeting with national and regional authorities, people displaced by the Lake Chad crisis, local hosting communities, and refugees from Libya camps.
More than 2.3 million people were in need of humanitarian assistance in Niger in 2019, and the number is expected to rise to 2.9 million in 2020.
The constant increase of displacements and migrations across and within Niger's borders is at the same time an indicator of the deteriorating situation and one of the main challenge for the humanitarian community.
The UN and humanitarian partners developed, together with the Government, a Humanitarian Response Plan for 2020 seeking US$407 million to assist 1.9 million people.
